Dear 6A02 Neighbors,
I walked throughout the entire 6A02 Single Member District to assess current conditions and identify areas needing attention related to last night's storm. I have contacted the appropriate District officials and agencies, including DDOT and DPW, to report the concerns I observed.
Per my attached pics, it does appear Maryland Avenue and Linden have the most damage.
If there is a street, sidewalk, home, alley, or other location I may have missed, please contact me so I can follow up.
Commissioner Kym Butler-Spires today officially filed her candidacy for re-election to Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6A02. Since taking office, Kym has worked tirelessly to ensure that every resident of 6A02 has a voice in the decisions that shape our neighborhood.
Drawing on her experience as a former SBA Director of Grants and U.S. diplomat, Kym has brought a level of professionalism and effectiveness to the ANC that residents have come to rely on. Her re-election campaign will focus on the five priorities she has championed since day one: responsive representation, neighborhood safety, responsible development, small business growth, and quality of life.
"I am honored to serve this community and I am asking for your continued trust," said Commissioner Butler-Spires. "There is still important work to do, and I am committed to seeing it through."
After months of community engagement and negotiation, Commissioner Kym Butler-Spires announced that a community benefit agreement has been secured for a major new development project within ANC 6A02.
The agreement includes a commitment to affordable housing units, local hiring preferences for construction and permanent jobs, and a community fund contribution to support neighborhood improvements. Commissioner Butler-Spires led the effort to ensure that residents had a meaningful voice in the process.
"Development in our neighborhood is inevitable, but it does not have to come at the expense of the people who already live here," said Commissioner Butler-Spires. "This agreement is proof that when we organize and advocate together, we can shape outcomes that benefit everyone."
The DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) has approved funding for new street lighting installations on two key corridors within ANC 6A02, following sustained advocacy by Commissioner Kym Butler-Spires and residents who raised the issue at multiple community meetings.
The lighting improvements will cover several blocks that residents have long identified as safety concerns, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists in the evening hours. Installation is expected to begin this fall.
"This is a win that came directly from residents speaking up," said Commissioner Butler-Spires. "I heard this concern at nearly every community meeting I attended, and I kept pushing until we got a commitment. This is what responsive representation looks like."
Commissioner Kym Butler-Spires hosted a free grant workshop for small business owners in ANC 6A02, drawing on her background as a former SBA Director of Grants to connect local entrepreneurs with funding opportunities they may not have known existed.
More than 30 business owners attended the workshop, which covered DC Small Business Development Center resources, federal small business grant programs, and tips for writing competitive applications. Several attendees expressed interest in applying for funding within the next quarter.
"Small businesses are the heartbeat of this neighborhood," said Commissioner Butler-Spires. "My job is to make sure our entrepreneurs have access to every resource available to them. Knowledge is power, and I want to share everything I know."
More than 60 residents of ANC 6A02 gathered for the first town hall of 2026, hosted by Commissioner Kym Butler-Spires. The event provided an opportunity for constituents to hear updates on key issues and ask questions directly of their commissioner.
Topics covered included the status of pending development projects, updates on the street lighting initiative, and a Q&A on city services and how residents can report issues effectively. Commissioner Butler-Spires also previewed her re-election platform and invited residents to get involved in the campaign.
"These town halls are the most important thing I do," said Commissioner Butler-Spires. "Democracy works best when people show up, and I am grateful to every resident who made time to be here."
